Pickling Cucumbers

Bell Peppers
(yes, the one on the left is purple/brown!)

Tomatoes

Dan made Israeli salad with the tomatoes and cucumbers - if you've never had Israeli salad, you should definitely try it sometime. It's delicious! When I was in Israel in 1996, we ate it everyday! Here's a great recipe for it...

This Week's Share - 8/18/10

>> Wednesday, August 25, 2010

It had been a few weeks since I was able to go to the CSA pick-up, so I had a lot of fun selecting our veggies last Wednesday. Here's what was available:
  • Basil
  • Green Peppers
  • Chili Peppers
  • Onions
  • Tomatoes
  • Carrots
  • Greens
  • Summer Squash/ Zucchini
  • Beans
  • Broccoli
I took the broccoli and the onions, and J kept the greens, the chili peppers, and the basil (since we grow our own). I picked a pint of tomatoes that were heirloom varieties - I wish I had taken a photo of them before we ate them! Oops. They were very tasty, but a little mushy...

For my half of the summer squash, I picked one yellow squash and one patty pan squash. If you've never had a patty pan squash, you should definitely try it - they're not only fun-looking, they taste great too! We made grilled veggies and grilled tofu with the squash, some leftover zucchini, and some onions and peppers. YUM!

I think this is the most varied and colorful produce we've gotten yet from the CSA! We're very excited to make some great food with these items...

Green Beans

Green Pepper

Rainbow Carrots

Red Cabbage and Scallions

Summer Squash/Zucchini

Thyme

Tomatoes

This week, J swapped out the lettuce for a 2nd head of red cabbage so we could each have one. They took a zucchini, while I asked him to get us a yellow squash to mix things up...

This Week's Share - 7/21/10

>> Saturday, July 24, 2010

We were very excited about this week's share, because there were a few new items! I even took some photos... (If you notice a difference in my photos this week, it's because my camera broke and I've been using Dan's - I think the color and saturation are different on his camera and I also don't know how to work it quite as well as my own!)

Here is what this week's share included:
  • Basil
  • Beet Greens
  • Carrots
  • Ailsa Craig Sweet Onions
  • Red Potatoes
  • Garlic*
  • Lettuce
  • Sweet Corn
  • Swiss Chard
  • Tomato
  • Zucchini

* A new feature of the CSA pick-up this week was a "swap box" where you could leave an item you didn't want and exchange it for something that another member didn't want. J left behind the garlic because it was pretty sad-looking, and he took an extra amount of Swiss chard. Works for me - I love Swiss chard!

Sorry that I don't have any photos to show you this week, but here's what was in the share:
  • Ailsa Craig Sweet Onions
  • Carrots
  • Cilantro
  • Fennel
  • Lettuce (We took all of the lettuce)
  • Scallions
  • Tomato
  • Zucchini
  • Radicchio (R&J took it this week)
I never specifically said this, but our friend N took our half of last week's share since we were out of town. I'm not sure exactly what was in it, which is why you won't see Week 5 listed anywhere...

This Week's Share - 6/30/10

>> Wednesday, June 30, 2010

This is what was available at our pick-up location today:

  • Beets
  • Cucumbers
  • Summer Squash/ Zucchini
  • Lettuce
  • Pearl Onions
  • Spinach
  • Carrots
  • Herbs
  • Kale or Collards
  • Cabbage or Broccoli
J decided to take the broccoli, basil, and kale, and we took the pearl onions, lettuce, and carrots. The rest of the items we split.

I was able to go to today's pick-up, so I took a photo for you to see what it actually looks like when we get the share (sorry, random people who ended up in the picture - I was trying to be quick about it):

Some photos I took when I got home:

  • Lettuce
  • Pearl Onions
  • Swiss Chard
  • Hakurei or Scarlet Turnips
  • Cilantro
  • Kohlrabi
  • Broccoli
There was actually less produce in the share this week than we've had the past 2 weeks. We took the onions, swiss chard, and broccoli, and R & J kept the kohlrabi and the lettuce. We split the rest. At least we still have a lot left from last week!

I'm making pesto tonight, I'll post the recipe and some photos in a little while!
